Beneath Southern Seas – John Davison and Tom Allibone (9.7/10)

This book is a companion to the six part SBS Australia television series ‘Submariners’ which I enjoy watching every now and then that focuses on the then new submarine HMAS Rankin’s first deployment to RIMPAC 2004.

While the video crew deployed with the submarine and her crew for a longer time the authors of the book spent somewhat less time aboard while providing more focus on the people from senior officers down; providing personality and depth to the characters in a way that you don’t get from the television series.

A very good read for the military historian or for those fascinated by the service of our fellow Australians in difficult circumstances. Highly recommended and a great read for those who know little about Australia’s Silent Service – the Submarine force.
