The A7 Era – Peter Berminghan (9.5/10)

Subtitled “the technical, pictorial and evolutionary history of the Victorian Railways’ S Class diesel-electric locomotive”, this book covers everything you will ever need to know about the design, build and entry to service of the Victorian Railways S class diesel locomotive. Like Peter’s other book it covers the history of the class from inception to delivery and subsequent running on Victorian and later other state railway system on both the broad gauge and standard gauge.

There is much information on the design, introduction to service,  day-to-day running, maintenance and upgrade life of the locomotives to the date of writing (1995). There is even coverage of the death of some of these locomotives – not all as some still live on and run daily on the railways systems of Victoria and neighbouring states.

If like me you love streamliners and want to know more about them I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Very readable and re-readable I really enjoyed this book.
